Ph.D. Course: Identification Strategies in Finance
The course will provide a toolbox & basic knowledge of strategies used to identify causal effects and how they can be used in empirical corporate finance, risk management, accounting, financial intermediation or insurance. What does it mean to say there is an “endogeneity problem”? How can you deal with this problem? (Please note: This is not a theory course. We will explain you how to use each method properly, not how to derive its asymptotic properties.)
The course will expose you to different methods commonly employed in empirical research. Because of a limited time, we will not cover all methods.
The first part of the course (lecture) covers the following topics: panel data analysis (fixed and random effects), instrumental variables, natural experiments, treatment, and difference-in-differences.
The second part of the course (lecture) covers the topics of matching strategies, selection models, regression discontinuity, and Granger causality.
In the third part of the course, you will independently present selected research papers that use methods covered in the course and apply the covered methods through a replication study.
